SUMMARY:Crossing the Line: Canada's Strong Borders Act
DESCRIPTION:The Strong Borders Act\, Bill C-2\, that is intended to improve border security\, has come under fire by hundreds of privacy professionals\, lawyers\, academics\, and civil society organizations concerned about the sweeping surveillance powers it grants to the Canadian government and law enforcement agencies. \n\n\n\nAmong other things\, Bill C-2 is designed “to facilitate access to basic information that will assist in the investigation of federal offences through an information demand or a judicial production order to persons who provide services to the public.” The breadth of that provision\, and others\, will have significant implications for privacy practitioners grappling with how to comply with Bill C-2 and with privacy laws. \n\n\n\nJoin law professor Robert Diab to explore the practical implications of Canada’s new Border Security legislation. \n\n\n\nThe Zoom link will be sent to registered attendees the day before the event. \n\n\n\nRegistration is now closed. Sign up at pacc-ccap.ca to keep up to date on the latest news and analysis about privacy\, access\, and data protection laws\, practices\, trends\, opportunities\, and PACC initiatives. \n\n\n\n\n\nRobert Diab is a Professor in the Faculty of Law at Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops BC\, and a co-author of Search and Seizure (Irwin Law\, 2023). His scholarship and commentary on law\, technology\, and privacy has appeared in venues that range from the McGill and Osgoode Hall Law Journals\, to Tech Policy Press and Newsweek. He has contributed to federal and provincial commissions of inquiry\, and continues to be involved in criminal and constitutional litigation. \n\n\n\n\n
