ICES is a not-for-profit research institute and a prescribed entity under section 45 of Ontario’s Personal Health Information Protection Act. Protecting privacy is absolutely essential to everything we do.
ICES is currently seeking a privacy professional with legal training to join its Privacy Office. Reporting to the chief privacy and compliance officer, the successful candidate will join an inter-disciplinary team of privacy professionals who provide a full complement of services across the ICES network.
Responsibilities of the position include, but may not be limited to:
Drafting and reviewing contracts, policies and other documents, as required by the ICES Privacy and Compliance Office
Conducting privacy research, including legal research
Conducting and reviewing privacy impact assessments
Investigating privacy incidents and complaints
Reporting and presenting to, consulting and negotiating with, research ethics boards and privacy regulators, where required representing the chief privacy and compliance officer
Contributing to the creation, support and delivery of ICES-wide privacy resources and information, including training
Conducting interviews, negotiating, consulting and liaising with internal and external parties at all levels to accomplish any of the above, including local privacy officers; ICES staff and scientists; data partner privacy, security and legal advisors; ICES service providers, privacy and security auditors and consultants; and research ethics boards
Keeping current on privacy trends and practices
Other activities as assigned by the chief privacy and compliance officer within the scope of this position.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required
LL.B/JD and lawyer in good standing with the Law Society of Upper Canada
A minimum of three years post-call experience with a minimum of two years of experience in a privacy-related role preferred
Recognized privacy accreditation
Professional or academic credentials in a complimentary discipline such as security, internal audit, or ethics which is strongly preferred
Strong analytic, interpersonal and communication skills
Demonstrated aptitude for developing working relationships with a broad range of professionals and stakeholders at multiple levels.
