The primary responsibility of this position is coordinating and preparing responses to formal access requests (i.e. freedom of information requests) received by the University pursuant to the FOIPP Act. This includes liaising and coordinating with University department liaison officers to obtain records included within the scope of access requests.
Other key responsibilities include:
- Providing advisory services to University of Alberta faculties and units in order to facilitate the University’s effective compliance with applicable access and privacy legislation (primarily the FOIPP Act)
- Investigating potential privacy breaches, and preparing recommendations for remediation where necessary
- In collaboration with the Director of the IPO, developing, reviewing and communicating University access and privacy policies, procedures, standards and guidelines to the campus and its communities through a variety of media and formats
- Reviewing surveys and research projects involving the use of personal information under the custody or control of the University
The Information and Privacy Advisor may also develop and deliver educational and communication programs about access to information and the protection of privacy, review third party agreements and contracts, and conduct and review Privacy Impact Assessments.
