Privacy and Access Council of Canada

The voice for privacy and access

Privacy Matters to Data Protection Professionals

Privacy practitioners are responsible to protect personal information in the custody or care of their organization. That includes keeping it secure when it’s shared with other parties, companies, and governments — which is possible when the data is encrypted.

But when platforms are required to break encryption in the hunt for illegal content, how can a data privacy professional be certain that the personal information communicated by their organization will only be seen by the intended recipient?

How can they be certain that the programs and processes to safeguard employee and customer information won’t be intercepted when it’s sent to the tax department, the payroll processor, the benefits administrator, the external lawyers and consultants?

How can data privacy professionals ensure their organization is complying with governing privacy laws knowing that every communication is automatically being examined by an unknown technology company that could be anywhere in the world?
