Garry Spicer is a principal consultant with Resilience Informatics, which focuses on Corporate and Information Systems Security. He specializes in transforming IS Security and Governance practices for organizations that are encountering change and risk management challenges. Garry has created, recovered, and improved the security functions of organizations in non-profit, academic, government, energy, financial, technology, utility, and light manufacturing sectors. As a former Governance Team Manager, and later a Director of Corporate Security, Garry is also acquainted with the myriad demands faced by today’s security leaders. His management skills are supported with technical experience in computer application development, database administration, and infrastructure design.
Garry brings a holistic approach to the practice of IS Security. Using proven techniques, he works to integrate people, processes, technology, and organizational structures into robust frameworks that address both internally and externally instigated risks. His diverse experience has led him to discern common misunderstandings about IS Security, and develop models that clarify the issues to achieve predictable and long term results for his clients. By emphasizing the need to approach Information Security and Privacy from a management perspective, he challenges other leaders to cultivate an outlook that is both pragmatic and rigorous.
Garry holds a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science and Management from the University of Ottawa, and a Master of Science in Management from the University of Lethbridge. His graduate research examines the influence of management sophistication on the effectiveness of Information Technology Security. With his academic background and nearly twenty years of field experience, Garry’s current focus is on bringing management disciplines into the arena of IS Security.
