Privacy and Access Council of Canada

The voice for privacy and access

Privacy Matters to Librarians

The vital role that libraries and librarians play in ensuring a well-informed public is indisputable. But what happens when automated algorithms scrutinize the books being ordered and the volumes patrons read online to gauge whether they support or criticize officialdom?

What happens when the online research done at libraries is hampered because legitimate content is blocked?

What happens when the digital books are blocked from being available because they question the official narrative, or explore topics deemed offensive?

What happens when digital versions of classic books are withdrawn by publishers complying with internet regulation rules that require offensive content to be taken down?
