New FOI research resource

11/Aug/2021

The BC Freedom of Information and Privacy Association (FIPA) has created the Transparency Spotlight — a table of over 6,500 Canadian and British Columbian news stories informed through Access to Information requests. The table can be sorted, and is searchable by keyword or by selecting one of ten pre-identified categories.

“Transparency Spotlight shows the important role access to information plays in research and reporting to keep our institutions transparent and accountable. It catalogues the government decisions, municipal policies, university governance, police surveillance, provincial energy sector projects, national security, and other decisions and actions that were hidden until revealed through access to information requests.”

The initial database – created by journalist Stanley Tromp – captures Federal and BC stories but the plan is to expand it to other provinces and territories.
