When the government or its agents are the ones to declare what is and isn’t true, anything can be declared “false news” or deemed to “undermine national security.” Heroes become heretics. Experts become exiles.
Under proposed legislation, there will be no need for courts to order the closure of civil rights groups as was just done in Russia; they can be silenced by platforms scouring and blocking content as they try to avoid heavy fines for letting Canadians see content that bureaucrats say is unacceptable.
Canadian human rights activists and lawyers won’t be the first to face prison for trying to improve human rights policies if authorities claim it undermines national security.
“Automated systems looking for hate speech or terrorist content might mistakenly identify news coverage or academic research that deals with these topics.”
