The FTC has requested comments regarding tech platform censorship, both on the extent to which tech firms are engaging in suppressing free speech, and the impact the platforms might have on user speech — whether from characterizing content as misinformation, hurtful, or offensive; outright censoring; or shadow banning content.
The FTC is particularly interested in feedback regarding the impact of the platform’s decision; moderation and appeal processes; coercion and pressure; and platform competition.
Although the consultation is through an American regulator, the determinations will likely affect Canadian users, and might have a direct impact on future Canadian legislative efforts.
